Why you press play
This used to be a radio station that played around the clock, the same song for everyone at the same moment. It isn't that anymore. Now nothing plays until you start it, and what you hear is yours alone.
What changed
For a while, AI Country Music ran as a continuous internet broadcast. One stream, one playlist, everybody tuned into the same moment of the same song. If you arrived halfway through a track, you heard the second half.
That broadcast has been switched off. In its place is something simpler: a library of songs and a play button. When you press start, your browser picks a song at random and plays it, then the next, then the next — in an order shuffled just for you. Two people listening at the same time hear different things.
Why it changed
Running a continuous broadcast turned out to bring yearly obligations and costs with it — registration with the Dutch media authority, and dealings with Buma/Stemra and Sena, among other things. For a large station that's simply part of the job.
This is not a large station. It has no advertising, no sponsors, no subscriptions, no donations built into the platform, and it has never made a cent. It's one person writing songs in the evenings. The gap between what the format demanded and what the project actually was had become too wide to keep bridging.
Shutting down entirely was the obvious option, and for a moment it was the plan. This is the alternative I preferred: keep the music available, drop the broadcast.
How it works now
- Nothing plays until you start it. There is no stream running in the background waiting for listeners.
- Your order is your own. The shuffle happens in your browser, so no two sessions line up.
- You're in control. Skip, go back, scrub through a song, or jump straight to anything in the queue — none of which a broadcast ever allowed.
- Nothing to install. It runs in the browser, on a phone as well as a laptop.
About the music
The songs are written by David van Coolwijk — the words, the stories, the direction, and often the melody and chords, worked out by ear on a piano or a guitar. AI handles the arrangement, the performance and the production. The voices you hear are synthetic, and the site has always said so plainly rather than inventing a band that doesn't exist.
Most of the catalogue is original. A handful of tracks are covers of songs old enough that their copyright has expired — Barbara Allen, Shady Grove, The Old Chisholm Trail — which anyone is free to perform. Those are marked as such.
Everything here is either written by me or a song whose rights have long since lapsed. That was true when this was a broadcast and it's true now.
This is not a real certification. There's no board, no standard and nobody handing these out — which is worth saying, because the internet is currently full of badges that look exactly like this one. Consider it a small joke at their expense. What's actually true about how these songs are made is written above, in plain words, without a seal.
